How to Talk So Kids Will Listen to You
- Repeat calmly if needed
If they don’t listen the first time, repeat calmly. Yelling only makes it worse.
2. Get their attention first
Don’t shout from far away. Go close, look at them, and speak gently.
3. Speak calmly and clearly
Use simple words. Don’t yell. Kids listen better when you’re calm.
4. Use positive words
Instead of saying “Don’t run,” say “Please walk.”
5. Explain why
Kids understand better when you tell them why. For example, “Put on your shoes so we can go to the park.”
6. Give choices
Let them feel in control. For example, “Do you want to wear the red shirt or the blue one?”
7. Listen to them too
When kids talk, stop and listen. They feel respected and will listen to you more.
8. Get down to their level
Kneel or sit so you’re eye to eye. It makes them feel safe and connected.
9. Be kind but firm
Set clear rules, but in a kind way. Example: “I know you want to play, but it’s bedtime now.”
10. Praise good behavior
When they do something right, say it: “Thank you for putting your toys away!”
